Dove Clinical Protection Antiperspirant Deodorant (Scent Original Clean) - Score 3
Health risks assessed:
The Fragrance list listed at an 8 on the hazardous scale, which was super high and upon reading the ingredients, the allergies were the main concerns for why this tested super high on the hazardous scale. I have not encountered any toxicity or allergy problems, however this made me think about the chemicals I am closely putting on my body, especially into my pores. I definitely re-evaluated my decision for this deodorant and wanted to immediately find another alternative.
Paul Mitchell TeaTree Special Shampoo - Score 7
Health risks assessed:
This shampoo is what my husband religiously uses and it really shocked me how dangerous this shampoo is! I immediately sought out a more holistic and healthier version of this shampoo. I actually called my husband and he was shocked and instantly wanted to stop using the shampoo. Of course, this triggered us to have more conversations about the other products we use on ourselves and our daily lives.
I absolutely agree everyone should research their products and make the transition. It's never too late to make changes especially those that benefit you directly. I had already started to transition my make-up and cosmetics to vegan/cruelty free-only brands, and now that I have gotten my husband involved, he wants to make the healthier change too.
Video Review
For the two videos by Ken Cook from at Environmental Working Group and Safe 1-1 cosmetics, I was very informed by all their insights.
Firstly, I am a heavy cosmetics user; recently have I been more careful and mindful of the products and ingredients I put on my own skin. I used to believe that the more expensive a cosmetic item was, the more benefits I would be having for my skin. I have learned that less is more. I have transitioned a lot of my products to be either organic or pure cold-pressed oil based, a lot found at local whole foods or organic markets. It is true we put on a lot of products that contain many harmful long-term chemicals, and it all starts at an early age. I do agree that we should be educated teenage women because they put on so many products - I have a 12 year old niece and I always tell her less is more and refrain from buying products such as crazy color hair spray and cheap beauty brands because I know their chemicals are not pure and more or less enhanced by more harmful chemicals. I especially appreciated the knowledge on how as companies attempt to move towards a more "natural" approach in their chemicals, they create bi-products that are even more harmful.

Hi Terri -
ReplyDeleteI think it's great that you and your husband are transitioning your products to ones that are better for your health. Tea Tree shampoo sounds "natural" but its crazy what ingredients are in these products. I was glad to see you looked up the deodorant as well. I made the switch to natural deodorant a few months ago when I learned that the ingredients in anti-antiperspirants are linked to cancer and Alzheimers. It was a bit of a struggle for me to find one that worked for my body (and most of them are wayyy more expensive) but it is definitely worth it!
Hi Terri,
ReplyDeleteInteresting to know about your dove deodorant. I looked up a degree brand and similarly they each contained a fragrance which scored an 8 as well. Just the smell good aspect of a product can cause harm, I question perfumes and colognes on the market as well. Just recently I started using DoTerra essential oils and I love them.
