House hold products reviewed:
Clorox Commercial Solutions Green Works Natural Cleaning Wipes
Key factors about this product:
This product was considered not considered hazardous by the 2012 OSHA Hazard, however this is listed under the category of Ethanol IARC Group 1 Carcinogens.
I further looked into what types of classifications of listed associated carcinogens:
Upon further review, here is what I found:
According to the International Agency of Research on Cancer (IARC) by the World Health Organization, (https://monographs.iarc.fr/agents-classified-by-the-iarc/)
Agents classified by the IARC are fielded into five groups:

This system is the most widely used for classifying carcinogens. According to Cancer.Org (2018), only a little over 100 are classified as "carcinogenic to humans."
Per the categories, Group 1 was the most carcinogenic to humans through Group 4 not carcinogenic to humans. Unfortunately, a lot of the products contain chemicals that are linked to carcinogens, which makes products very difficult perform on a consumer level, yet becoming truly organic and healthy.
Reviewing this product makes me wonder if there are other alternatives that can provide the performance of disinfection, but give a healthier alternative that is safe and not linked to carcinogens.
Second product reviewed: Natures Miracle Pet Wipes
Key factors about this product:
This product was a little more difficult to navigate its' health effects listed. I use these wipes to wipe my dog's paws after we go outdoors. The first listed effects are:
| Acute Health Effects: | From MSDS Signs and Symptoms of Exposure: May cause irritation. Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure: None known. |
|---|---|
| Chronic Health Effects: | From MSDS Severe overexposure may cause liver and kidney damage. |
This makes me want to make my own home made mixture of natural soap to wipe my dogs' paws down. Especially since she tends to lick her paws once in a while.
I decided to change and find alternatives with a lower classification of carcinogens for cleaning wipes. I believe everyone should research these ingredients because you essential touch, walk or even consume what these chemicals touch.

Hi Terri -
ReplyDeleteI find it very interesting and slightly concerning what you found about the clorox wipes - the 2012 OSHA Hazard deems them not hazardous yet the WHO classifies them as "carcinogenic to humans." That makes this all so much more frustrating that it is difficult to find correct information about the products we are using. I can understand why you are looking for an alternative for you dog and I think it's a great idea.
Thank you for sharing the second resource. I agree with Ayla that its kind of contradictory to have two major government entities have different ratings of the same product. How much time and energy is spent into looking into these findings? This apploes to our pharmaceutical and health products. A majority of currently prescribed medications were approved and passed through FDA years ago, but sadly there is no mandate to have the drugs retested or monitored for actually efficacy and safety. I also start think about how food products are controlled and regulated in the markets. There are so many words, disclaimers and seals on packaging these days to peak consumer interest. It is scary.
